Google AI Pro vs Ultra: limits, storage and value
Pro and Ultra no longer differ by one simple multiplier. Google now presents Ultra at 5x and 20x levels, while Pro remains the broad middle tier. The right comparison is therefore not “Pro vs Ultra” in the abstract, but Pro against the exact Ultra capacity you can buy in your market.

Quick answer
What is the direct answer?
Choose Google AI Pro when 5 TB of storage and 4x standard Gemini access cover your work. Choose Ultra only when you repeatedly hit Pro limits in Flow, video, agents or long research sessions, and confirm whether the offer is the 5x or 20x Ultra level before paying. Our own Ultra card is a separate one-month top-up; read its live capacity and price rather than assuming every Ultra listing is identical.
Key points before you buy
- Google currently describes AI Pro as 4x standard access and AI Ultra as 5x or 20x Pro depending on the level.
- The current plan page lists 5 TB for Pro, 20 TB for the 5x Ultra and 30 TB for the 20x Ultra.
- Both Pro and Ultra receive a 1 million-token context window in Gemini Apps.
- Flow credits and advanced feature limits matter more than the headline multiplier for video and agent users.
- Check which Ultra capacity your country and the seller actually provide; the word “Ultra” alone is not enough.

The current plan line-up, not the old one
Google's current page presents three consumer tiers, with Ultra split into 5x and 20x options in the comparison.
Older guides often describe AI Pro as 2 TB and Ultra as a single 30 TB plan. That is no longer a safe description of the live plan page. The current comparison lists 5 TB for AI Pro, 20 TB for the 5x Ultra and 30 TB for the 20x Ultra, while Google AI Plus sits below both with 400 GB.
This matters because a marketplace can reuse the word “Ultra” while selling a different capacity. Before comparing the monthly number, identify the storage and usage multiplier attached to the exact product.
Price and storage comparison
The US list reference is useful for orientation, but local tax, currency and the selected Ultra level determine the real checkout amount.
| Plan | Usage reference | Storage | What the price really buys |
|---|---|---|---|
| Google AI Plus | 2x standard Gemini access | 400 GB | Entry access to Gemini and Google-app features |
| Google AI Pro | 4x standard Gemini access | 5 TB | The mainstream tier for Flow, NotebookLM and larger libraries |
| Google AI Ultra 5x | 5x AI Pro access | 20 TB | Higher limits for sustained creative or research work |
| Google AI Ultra 20x | 20x AI Pro access | 30 TB | The highest consumer limits and the largest storage pool |
Where the limits actually diverge
The multiplier is only a summary; different features have separate quotas and different usage costs.
- Gemini chat, long conversations and file analysis consume different amounts of the same usage budget.
- Deep Research and video generation are high-cost actions, so the practical gap appears faster there.
- Google's comparison shows Flow credits rising from 1,000 per month on Pro to 10,000 on the 5x Ultra and 25,000 on the 20x Ultra.
- Notebook size and feature access also increase across the tiers, so storage is not the only Pro-to-Ultra difference.
- Some headline tools and features remain country- or language-limited even on Ultra.
The one-week test before upgrading
Do not upgrade on the feeling that Pro is “slow”. Record what actually stopped you.
- 1Keep a note of every time Pro blocks, queues or reduces a request during a normal week.
- 2Label each block as chat, file analysis, Deep Research, Flow, video, coding or another feature.
- 3Separate a model limit from a feature that is unavailable in your country or language.
- 4If most blocks are in one high-cost category, compare the Ultra level that raises that specific limit.
- 5If blocks are occasional, change your workflow or buy another Pro month before moving to Ultra.
Who should stay on Pro
Pro is the right default unless a measurable workload repeatedly exceeds it.
- Writers, researchers and general productivity users who rarely hit the ceiling.
- Small teams or individuals who need 5 TB but not a very large Flow credit pool.
- People testing Gemini for the first time who have not measured one week of real usage.
- Buyers whose account country does not have the exact Ultra level they need.
Who should consider Ultra
Ultra makes sense when the extra capacity removes a recurring block in paid work.
- Creators who repeatedly exhaust Flow or video-generation quotas.
- Heavy research users who run long, multi-step Deep Research sessions.
- Users who need the largest storage tier for original media and archives.
- People who can name a concrete task that Pro cannot finish within its limits.
What to verify before buying either tier
A plan comparison is only useful after you confirm the account, country and exact product.
- Sign in to the correct Google account and check for an existing Pro or Ultra membership.
- Read the live product title, storage and multiplier on the seller's page.
- Separate a Google subscription from a one-month direct top-up; their renewal rules differ.
- Check that the feature you need is available in your country, not just that the plan is sold there.
- After delivery, confirm the plan in Google One and test the specific limit you bought it for.

Frequently asked questions
Is Google AI Ultra always 30 TB?
No. Google's current comparison shows 20 TB for the 5x Ultra and 30 TB for the 20x Ultra. Check the exact level on the plan card before assuming 30 TB.
Does AI Pro have a 1 million-token context window?
Google's Gemini Apps limits page currently lists a 1 million-token context window for both AI Pro and AI Ultra. The available context can still depend on the feature and the file type.
Is Ultra worth it for occasional video generation?
Usually not. Occasional use is more likely to fit Pro, including its monthly Flow credit allowance. Ultra is easier to justify when video work repeatedly exhausts those credits.
Can I start with a one-month top-up and upgrade later?
You can buy another month later, but a top-up is not a subscription upgrade and does not automatically renew. Treat each purchase as a separate one-month decision.
Why does the local price differ from the US list price?
Google applies local currency, tax and regional promotions. A US list price is a reference, not a quote for an account in another country.
